Embassy of Israel Briefing
For the second time in the short history of the
State of Israel, the Cabinet has decided to
dismantle settlements and withdraw settlers from
territories.
The Cabinet's decision on the implementation of
the disengagement plan is an historical decision
that was accepted in order to give every chance
to peace with the Palestinians. The decision is
based on Israel being a country seeking peace
and on Israel's willingness to pay a heavy price
towards reaching this peace.
The decision to withdraw
from the settlements in the Gaza Strip is not an
easy one, but one that was made in order to
enhance the possibilities of peace in the
region. Prime Minster Ariel Sharon stressed
these ideas in his speech before the Conference
of Presidents on the day the Cabinet made this
crucial decision.

The Cabinet decision is
intended to minimize the friction between
Israelis and Palestinians. Through this we hope
to improve the security of Israel and to take
advantage of the window of opportunity.
