Orde Wingate Centennial Ceremony Arlington National Cemetery
April 27, 2003

Undersecretary Dov Zakheim, dear members of the Wingate family, Jewish War Veterans, distinguished speakers, and all who have come today to pay tribute to a decorated soldier, and an honorable person of integrity, morals, and great courage:

It is a privilege to be here and celebrate the 100th birthday anniversary of the great British Christian Zionist, Orde Wingate.

At an early age, Orde Wingate was determined to do great things. He was a man of vision and destiny.

He took incredible risks in defending Jewish lives and rebuilding our nation. He remains in our hearts today, and forever.

He was a true friend of Israel, and of the Jewish people as a whole. In fact, the pre-independence Jewish community in Israel named Orde Wingate "Ha'Yadid," meaning "The Friend." It was a name he rightly deserved.

Upon arrival in Israel, he was touched by the magic of the people and the region. He strongly believed in freedom and justice, and for this reason, he committed himself to the Zionist cause.

When a Jewish soldier from Orde Wingate's military unit asked him why he was risking so much to offer his help, he said, "I count it my privilege to help you fight your battle."

Moshe Dayan said that Wingate, "was a military genius and a wonderful man."

One soldier, describing his first patrol with Wingate, commented, "We were amazed; only he was capable of leading us in such territory and with such confidence."

But beyond the military skills of mobility and strength, the values that he inspired in the early Jewish defensive forces remain one of his greatest legacies.

He led by example and taught personal responsibility, self-discipline, and ethical conduct. qualities that the Israel Defense Forces continue to promote and uphold.

Orde Wingate helped and taught us to defend ourselves from the terrorism, butchery, and murder of our people nearly seven decades ago.

Unfortunately, Israel still faces similar threats. Yet, the spirit of the Israeli people is one of strong resolve, determination, and a true desire for peace in our region.

This is the spirit of Orde Wingate.

Israel is a country created by the hard work and sacrifice of brave men and women, who shared a common vision in ensuring a viable future for the Jewish people in our homeland.

Orde Wingate not only shared this vision, he greatly helped it come true. We will never forget his special place in our history.

Thank you.
